This rant is in response to this review of Slumdog Millionaire. I have read similar reviews where Slumdog Millionaire and other movies about Bombay like Salaam Bombay receive  negative reviews because they claim that such  films are trying to sell poverty to the western audience. However, this reviewer loses all credibility when he compares Slumdog Millionaire to Trainspotting. His views are similar to Amitabh Bachchan who slammed the movie on his own  blog because it portrays Bombay/Mumbai in a negative light. The reviewer seems to have a problem with Danny Boyle showing “Mumbai slums as a hotbed of tantalizing images conveying the splendour of squalidity”. He assumes that living in the slums is just all depressing, failing to understand that for people who actually live in the slums, for them its just life as it were any other life. I find it hilarious that this reviewer who reviews Bollywood movies on a daily basis has a hard time digesting escapist cinema like Slumdog Millionaire and is worried about corny dialogues. I also find it quite ironic  that people who like to critic on Bombay/Mumbai are most likely the ones who have the least amount of knowledge when it comes to issues they are critiquing . I doubt Mr. Bachchan has even personally  seen the slums or probably hasn’t even come in contact with the so called “slumkids”, he is probably too busy on his blackberry in his Mercedes with tinted  windows whenever he travels around the city. Amitabh Bachchan is a great actor and everything but never trust a man who probably pays somebody to write his “own” blog.

Rant over.

Endtroducing-dj-shadow I know this sounds very clichéd but allow me to wax lyrical about my favorite record. Endtroducing changed my life. Before Endtroducing, my musical tastes consisted of 50 Cent,Young Buck,Lyodd Banks errr pretty much the G Unit family. I was quite content with my superior taste and I was one of those assholes who would turn up the volume really high on the bus to let people know how “cool” I was. I like to believe that it was just a phase that I went through but now the wiser me believes that it’s all about perspective. I thought rap music was cool because I didn’t know any better, at that point I thought all rock music sounds the same and its all about people screaming their lungs out with no regard for melody or music itself Then one day , planning on picking up the latest rap album , I happened to look upon this strange album with a shot of an out of focus record shop with two men rummaging through the records and something about it just made my hands reach out and grab it and take it to the counter. I came home and listened to it and the next day I pretty much went and picked up his entire discography. This led me to explore more in to music which to me fell under the term “alternative” just because it didn’t fall under any other category that I knew of. I later discovered Massive Attack, Portishead, Radiohead and slowly all the stuff that I listen to now. I was pretty much a kid in the candy store and I found myself buying 2-3 albums a week (your welcome HMV), albums that were full of alien sounds to be discovered for the first time. So you must be asking….ok so what exactly does Endtroducing sound like?? I won’t insult the record by trying to sum it up in few sentences but would encourage you to check it out yourself.

The Fall – Tarsem Singh

Lately, Slumdog Millionaire seems to be getting all the attention. So allow me to go against the grain and bring some attention to a movie called The Fall directed by Tarsem Singh. Some people might say Tarsem Singh is a poor man’s Alejandro Jodorowsky and I agree. While Jodorowsky takes beautiful images and juxtaposes them with bizzare plotlines , Tarsem seems to stick to beautiful images and a straightforward if somewhat bland plotline.I was shocked when I learned that no special effects were used for the film and that the film was shot on 26 locations over 18 countries with most of them being in Jodhpur which is a city in Rajasthan, India. I am ashamed to say that despite living in India for 15 years, I have never travelled around India , but this movie is definitely going to change that.

So it seems that the day has come. After months of deliberations , I have finally decided to create a blog!!!What is this blog about?? Well , its about everything and nothing. It is about everything that I think needs to be blogged about but mainly movies , music and literature. It will be about nothing in the sense that a lot of the topics I blog about will be so trivial that a lot of the readers would not care about it , but that doesn’t matter.
